Serena Williams tweets picture of swollen ankle

Andre Iguodala Compares Jeremy Lin To Black Hockey Player

Ball So Hard

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr caused a stir earlier this week when he said all the hype surrounding New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin was because he was Asian. Philadelphia 76ers forward Andre Iguodala listens to the Sports Grind Entertainment on iHeart Radio and went one further than Calvin Casey’s explanation of the Williams sisters to the tennis game and said Lin is like a black hockey player.

“Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he’s Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don’t get the same praise,” Mayweather wrote.

Iguodala agreed Lin’s race, as he is the first Asian-American to start an NBA game, has factored in the attention he is receiving, but did not want to detract from what the former Harvard star was achieving on the court.

“When you see the majority doing it you say, ‘Ah, he’s been doing it since he was a kid. It’s in his blood, whatever. You see Lin doing it and you say, ‘You’re serious?’ It’s kind of like seeing a black hockey player doing well. Race does play a role in it but at the same time you have to respect it, that’s how I feel. You have to respect it whether you like it or not. It’s a feel-good story.”

Lin hit a game-winning three with less than a second on the clock against the Toronto Raptors Tuesday and then added a career high 13 assists against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday.

His No. 17 jersey has become the league’s top seller, while Madison Square Garden Co.’s share price has soared to an all-time high.

Iguodala said the interesting thing will be seeing if Lin can maintain his success long-term.

“He’s only six games in the league. Game 30, game 40, that’s where you can kind of see where a guy’s at,” he said.

Danica Patrick Yahoo’s Most Searched Athlete In 2011

TALENT

Yahoo today released its Year In Review data for 2011, and there isn’t a single NFL or MLB player on its 10-deep list of “Top Searched Athletes.” Perhaps far more notable is that five of the top 10 are women, including the top spot, which went to the GoDaddy.com girl, Danica Patrick. Danica jumped all the way to No. 1 from No. 6 last year, when Manny Pacquiao topped the 2010 list.

Last year, the only NFL player to make the list was Brett Favre, at No. 4.

But the biggest surprise is that it appears web surfers have finally given up the hunt for new photos of Anna Kournikova. She was No. 3 in 2010, but didn’t make Yahoo’s list this year. Two others to drop off were skier Lindsey Vonn and soccer’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

  • 1. Danica Patrick
  • 2. Tiger Woods
  • 3. Manny Pacquiao
  • 4. Maria Sharapova
  • 5. Serena Williams
  • 6. Kris Humphries
  • 7. Hope Solo
  • 8. Kobe Bryant
  • 9. Lamar Odom
  • 10. Caroline Wozniacki

Yahoo also tracked which teams were searched for most often, and there MLB dominated, with five selections, including the No. 1 New York Yankees. The NFL had three teams, the NBA one and soccer checked in with one. The surprise there is that the Miami Heat didn’t make the list.

  • 1. New York Yankees
  • 2. Pittsburgh Steelers
  • 3. Boston Red Sox
  • 4. Green Bay Packers
  • 5. Texas Rangers
  • 6. St. Louis Cardinals
  • 7. Detroit Tigers
  • 8. Chicago Bears
  • 9. Manchester United
  • 10. Los Angeles Lakers

Mary Carillo Calls Serena Willams Ass Clown

TALENT

On Monday the the people at the U.S. Open fined tennis star Serena Williams $2,ooo for her verbal abusing of chair umpire Eva Asderaki in the women’s finals. But in a national radio interview it was CBS tennis analyst Mary Carillo who did a little bit of verbal abusing as she ripped Williams behavior.  Carillo likens Serena to “an ass-clown.”

“Serena doesn’t seem to understand how courtside microphones work. [...] She was surprised to know that all of that stuff she was saying to that woman was getting picked up. I don’t understand how she thinks that that stuff isn’t going out over the air. I don’t like bullies. I think they’re the scourge of the universe. [...] What happens in the sport of tennis is that there are no substitutions. The player has so much power on that court. If you throw her off the court, the match is over. It’s not like in any other team sport where someone is acting like an ass-clown and you can toss them out and the game continues. Believe me, tennis players have always understood how much power they have and they’ve pretty much always understand how much abuse they could dole out before they get in trouble.”

Serena Williams Fined By The U.S. Open For Berating Chair Umpire

TALENT

Serena Williams was fined $2,000 by the U.S. Open for berating the chair umpire during the final. Tournament referee Brian Earley issued his ruling a day after Williams was cited by chair umpire Eva Asderaki for a code violation for verbal abuse during a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Sam Stosur in the women’s singles championship match at Flushing Meadows.

Williams earned $1.4 million at the U.S. Open: $900,000 for finishing as the runner-up, plus a $500,000 bonus for having come in first place in the U.S. Open Series standings, which take into account results at hard-court tuneup tournaments.A sampling of what Williams said, prompting Asderaki to call the code violation:

“You’re out of control.”

“You’re a hater, and you’re just unattractive inside.”

“Really, don’t even look at me.”

Asked at her news conference Sunday night whether she regretted any of her words, the 13-time Grand Slam champion rolled her eyes and replied: “I don’t even remember what I said. It was just so intense out there. … I guess I’ll see it on YouTube.”

Marion Bartoli Banishes Her Own Parents From Her Wimbledon Match

TALENT

Ninth seeded French tennis star Marion Bartoli reached the Wimbledon last 16 on Saturday to face Serena Williams but only after an extraordinary on court bust up with her father who she banished from the stands. Bartoli, the 2007 runner-up, ordered her father and coach Walter, as well as her mother, to leave after she lost the first set of her third round match against Italy’s Flavia Pennetta.

The decision appeared to have the desired effect as 26-year-old Bartoli went on to win 5-7, 6-4, 9-7 in just over three hours.

“I was so tired and exhausted that really I had to express my emotions somehow. I saw them after the match and they understood completely. It was not against them. It was just that we played a very long first set, and I was exhausted and I was tired and I was feeling worse and worse. I needed to get that frustration out, so I showed it that way. I could have broken a racquet. I normally I never act like that. I felt at this point I had to get all this frustration out and start again,” as she tried to explain the reasoning for banishes her parents.

Her parents did up seeing the match on a TV and said it was one of her best matches they had ever seen her play.

WTF: Serena Williams

Don't Buckle

This was tennis star Serena Williams new avatar for her Twitter account for about a hour or so before people got their panties in a wad and caused her to change it. I’m a fan of the avatar but maybe considering she just had a stalker scare it’s not such a good idea. It won’t make me follower her on Twitter but I do hope she brings it back.
