San Antonio Spurs Top 9 Worst Injuries Of All Time

1996-97: The Gift & The Curse

The latest injury to San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker, a broken the fourth metacarpal in his shooting hand, has cost him the rest of the regular season in a year that has already plagued him with plantar fasciitis, spraining both ankles, a strained hip flexor and food poisoning.

With the Spurs currently hanging onto the Western Conference seventh seed that already has many questioning their  chances in the playoffs and with this latest injury it will sure cast a greater shadow of doubt. While injuries are part of the game, what have been the 9 most damaging to the Spurs franchise? Why 9? In honor of Tony.

  • 9. Tony Parker 2009-10 season

Parker an NBA Finals MVP season looked shaky from the start when he suffered his first injury in a year that was filled with many. While playing overseas in the off-season for France against Hungary in Eurobasketball Parker turned his ankle. The bug was cast before the season even started but stayed with him until March 6 in Memphis, where his regular season came to end. Parker sat out numerous games in the year to a variety of injuries: plantar fasciitis, a strained hip flexor, spraining both ankles and food poisoning.

  • 8. James Silas 1976-76 season

Possibly one of the best Spurs of all-time that the NBA never had a chance to see at his peak. In the last season ABA before the merger Captain Late broke his ankle by landing on the foot of New Jersey Nets guard Brian Taylor in the ABA Finals. Recovered and ready for the Spurs first season in the NBA he suffered a cartilage tear in his knee restricting him to play in only 22 games for a Spurs team that was poised to contend. Silas played only 37 games the following season and was out of the league in four years.

  • 7. Manu Ginobili 2008-09 season

One of the greatest to put on a Spurs jersey was injured in the semi-finals of the Beijing Olympics. The injury carried through to the NBA season and limited him to appear only in 44 regular season games and missed the entire playoffs. San Antonio went in as the third seed with a 54–28 record but was eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round 4–1 the earliest exit since 2000.

  • 6. Johnny Dawkins 1988-89 season

Originally drafted with the 10th overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft the former Duke all time leading scorer and Naismith College Player of the Year was suppose to be the point guard of the future for the Spurs and coach Larry Brown. Durring the 88-89 season he started to suffer from a nerve injury in his left leg and foot that allowed him to only see action in 32 games. The nerve injury in his leg would eventually force him to retire from the game.

  • 5. Terry Cummings 1992-93 season

In a season in which the Spurs improved on its record and advanced out of the first round they did so with limited minutes from one of their best scorers in Cummings. In the off-season Cummings tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during a pickup game that forced him to miss the first 74 regular season games. Upon his return, he could no longer put up All-Star numbers he was accustomed and from then on was used in a role much like a reserve.

  • 4. Derek Anderson 2000-01 season

Anderson was a vital part in the Spurs plans of providing outside help to Tim Duncan and David Robinson averaging 15 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists per game on the wing. The Spurs looked to be on their way to earining a second NBA championship in 3 years as the stars where lining up until Dallas Mavericks Juwan Howard drew a flagrant foul on Anderson. He separated his right shoulder when he drove for the basket and Howard swung his arm into Anderson’s side that caused him to land on his shoulder. He missed the rest of the Mavericks series and returned in the conference finals against the in limited minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers. Anderson and the Spurs where caught in a no win situation since it wasn’t adequate enough time for him to heal.

  • 3. Tim Duncan 1999-2000 season

In the Spurs first chance at trying to repeat as champions after winning their first NBA championship, they entered the playoffs without Duncan. He was averaging 23 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game in a season that he had earned co-MVP with Shaquille O’Neal during the All-Star Game. However Duncan injured his meniscus shortly before the end of the regular season against the Sacramento Kings. The injury forced him to miss the playoffs and the Spurs saw them lose to the Phoenix Suns 3–1 in the first round. Without Duncan the Spurs relied on Malik Rose and Jerome Kersey to play alongside David Robinson but in the series they saw them go down as well with injuries.

  • 2. Johnny Moore 1986-87 season

An assist man, who lead the league in that category in 1981-82, a steal man, an all around NBA player in his first five season with the Spurs. Moore often found the open man and wasn’t afraid to make the extra pass as he is one of only three players in teams history to record 20 assists during a game was hospitalized December 26,1986 with the devastating disease, Desert Fever.  Doctors warned him that the disease could be fatal. Desert Fever luckily did not cost his life but ended up costing his basketball career as Moore lost three years of playing. He finally was able to return to the court to play in 53 games during 1989-90 season, which would be his last.

  • 1. David Robinson 1996-97 season

The year that will be known as the gift and curse for the Spurs franchise. That season saw Robinson hurt his back in the preseason, an injury that would plagued him the rest of his career, limited him to 6 games before breaking a bone in his foot. He wound up missing the entire season and the Spurs finished 20-62. The curse is it cost the Spurs their best player in franchise history and their season but the gift came in the form of ping pong balls and the drafting of Tim Duncan out of Wake Forest University with the number one overall pick.

Is there a Spurs injury you believe that was missed to be of greater significant than these 9? Feel free to leave your feedback.

New Jersey Nets Offer To Do Tax Returns, If You Just Go To Their Games

1,016 Fans

The New Jersey Nets have only won six games this season and are back at another gimmick to get people of New Jersey see them come play. This time, they’re giving fans a coupon to have their tax returns done for attending.

The Nets have combined with Roni Deutch Tax Center to offer a free New Jersey income tax return to state residents 18 years and older who attend their game against the Orlando Magic on Friday night at the Izod Center. Patrons won’t get their state taxes done on the spot. They’ll be given a coupon for a free state tax return. The cost is usually $29.

Some of the Nets other promotions have been the “Your Ticket to a Player” which offered fans the opportunity to have Devin Harris, Brook Lopez or any other player on the roster stop by at a family birthday party. All you had to do was pay $25,000 for four courtside tickets for 10 games. You got parking, food and drinks, too.

There also was a 10-game “Match-Up” ticket plan through which their fans got a collection of reversible jerseys with the uniforms of LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Dwyane Wade and Howard on one side and a Nets player on the other.

But the bottom line is no matter how enticing this promotions are, you still going to watch the Nets.

New Jersey Nets Play In Front Of 1,016 Fans

Embarrassing

The New Jersey Nets at home to the Milwaukee Bucks 97-77 in front of 1,016 fans. Granted their is a huge snow storm effecting the east coast but these are still the same Nets that are running a promotion for a lucky fan to be head coach for a day and on record to match the leagues worst record, 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers 9-73.

The Nets where playing their final home game before the All-Star break and the loss dropped them to 4-48 on the season. Swingman Chris Douglas-Roberts whose name has been the subject of trade rumors and didn’t play at all in Tuesday 104-97 loss to Cleveland sat for the majority of the game with a towel wrapped over his head embarrassed for what he was seeing and not being a part of it. With 3:35 left in the game 12 people started the CDR chants once he final entered.

So sad.

Eric Mussleman Is Not Eligible

The New Jersey Nets have a new contest where the “grand prize” is the chance to coach the Nets for a day.

The winner gets to be in attendance at a morning practice at the Nets training facility; official team training gear; lunch with a Nets team executive to be selected by the Nets in its sole discretion;  attendance at the Nets pre-game shoot around, at which Winner will assist coaches with pre-game drills; pre-game dinner in Winners’ Club restaurant at the IZOD Center; two premium tickets to the Nets game; tour of the Nets locker room; and attendance at post-game press conference.

Del Harris Quits The New Jersey Nets

Where Are You Going Del?

Everyone knows the New Jersey Nets ship is sinking, its been that way since the NBA season tipped off but before it officially has sunk assistant Del Harris has quit the team.

The Nets issued the statement minutes after they lost 97-93 to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night.

Harris joined the team in late November after general manager Kiki Vandeweghe was named the interim coach following the firing of Lawrence Frank after the Nets lost their first 17 games.

We all are watching to see if the Nets make history in losing the most games in an NBA season but what does it say to your organization when a NBA lifer quits only two and half months on the job?

Shawne Williams Charged With 8 Drug Counts

Here's Your Ticket Out The League

The recently traded Shawne Williams, who was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the New Jersey Nets for Eduardo Najera, was indicted on eight drug charges in Shelby County, Tennessee

Four counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and four counts of conspiracy to distribute the drug codeine.

Each crime is considered a felony and carries a sentence of 1-2 years. Williams was one of 24 defendants busted in a Memphis police sting.

Eduardo Najera Traded For Kris Humphries & Shawne Williams

Moving Day

I think Eduardo Najera is one of the most underappreciated NBA players in the last few years, the guy does a lot of dirty work and can play, now be that his talents are not the same from four years ago that doesn’t diminish his hard work and grind he puts in. Plus he attended Cornerstone Christian Academy High School in San Antonio.

The Dallas Mavericks must believe the same thing as they have traded Kris Humphries and Mavs headache Shawne Williams to re aquire Najera from the New Jersey Nets. The Mavericks will also save about $4.7 million on this deal, meaning a small luxury tax for owner Mark Cuban

The move for the Mavericks was really about getting rid of a headache in Williams because of his  unprofessional attitude and with Tim Thomas,James Singleton, and Dirk Nowitzki, the power forward slot was pretty crowded was crowded for Humphries.

Najera, 33, was averaging 3.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 16 minutes per game.

Mavericks: Winners/ Nets: Losers

NBA To Outlaw Gambling On Team Planes? New Jersey Nets Does So

What Is A NBA Player To Do?

In the aftermath of the Washington Wizards Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton wild west gun showdown in the locker room over a gambling debt, the New Jersey Nets have banned all gambling games on team flights.

Rod Thorn the Nets president and former the chief of discipline for the NBA, said “I think after this incident with the Wizards that we just decided that we would not have any on our planes. We’ve never had a problem with it. But obviously, you can see what can happen.”

The NBA reportedly is considering to push that restricts gambling on team premises due to the Arenas and former referee Tim Donaghy situation.

One reason the gambling and card playing is so common is that players receive their daily per diem of $113 at the start of most road trips in one lump sum. A typical eight-day trip means that all players are boarding the first flight with more than $900 cash from the team. Losses can be settled quickly.

Orlando Magic general manager Ottis Smith said his team already does have a rule that discourages big wads of cash visible on the table but doesn’t look to ban the card games unless it becomes a requirement from the NBA.

“This whole thing has raised everyone’s awareness,” Smith said. “We’re constantly trying to educate our players, not just about guns, but about everything that’s out there. Have we done everything we can to avoid problems? Probably not. But with all this out there now, this is probably a good time to do it.”

David Letterman’s Top 10 Wizards Gun Explanations

It’s a toss up between Number 3 “wanted gun close by in case team tried to trade me to the Nets” and Number 2 “coach didn’t specify what kind of pre-game shootaround it was.”

Byron Scott Will Rejoin ESPN As An NBA Analyst

352-355

352-355

ESPN’s NBA Hiring Department has nabbed another former player/coach, and this time he’s even a former employee of the network. Scott was fired last month after more than five seasons in New Orleans. He coached the New Jersey Nets from 2000-04, leading them to two NBA finals appearances. The recently fired coach Byron Scott will be back with the network this January as an NBA studio analyst. Scott previously served as an ESPN analyst during the 2003-04 season.

“I look forward to being able to contribute my insights and perspective on the game I love,” said Scott. “ESPN has an abundance of terrific talent and I’m glad to be back in broadcasting with the premier sports network.”

He won three NBA championships as a player with the Lakers.

It’s Over!!! The New Jersey Nets Finally Post Their 1st Win

1-18

Still Hold The Record For Worst Start

The streak is over and Kiki is the hero. Finally is what every NBA fan is thinking as the New Jersey Nets got to experience what a win exactly feels like.

The Nets won for the first time this season and their first win since April 13, ending the worst start in NBA history at 18 losses by beating the Charlotte Bobcats 97-91.

Brook Lopez and Courtney Lee where the stars as Lopez had 31 points and 14 rebounds and Lee scored a career-high 27 points in his return to the starting lineup for the Nets in their first game under Kiki Vandeweghe, their general manager who will coach the rest of the season.

Vandeweghe was given the position Tuesday, two days after the Nets fired Lawrence Frank. Assistant Tom Barrise guided the team for the previous two losses so Vandeweghe could bask in the glory when the team had one of it’s best chances to turn the page.

But they still are the Nets and gaffes still occur in East Rutherford as Vandeweghe first coaching decision was to inset Lee for Trenton Hassell in the starting lineup. Apparently though nobody told the personal announcer as he announced Hassell doing starting lineup introductions.

The game included some eire side notes as the Nets last victory was in April and against the Bobcats. In addition Bobcats coach Larry Brown once coached the Nets in 1981-82 and ‘82-’83. Brown also coached Vandeweghe for a year at UCLA and again for the Los Angeles Clippers at the end of his pro career.

The krispy kreme is finally no more but let’s not forget the history still holds this New Jersey Nets team photo as the worst to ever start an NBA season,0-18.

Kiki Vandeweghe & Del Harris Take Over As Nets Head Coach

KIKI

KIKI

I always heard the stories of how Kiki Vandeweghe was a baller at UCLA but I missed out on that time and unforunatley saw A LOT of his pro career, for some stupid reason I thought the name Kiki was one of the coolest I had ever heard.

Now it seems I’ll be seeing more of Kiki as he has decided that no one else can right the sinking ship in New Jersey but himself, yeah good luck. The Nets have chosen him as the replacement for fired coach Lawrence Frank for the rest of the season.

It also seems that Kiki is going to lug around some old baggage as he has agreed to bring in longtime NBA coach Del Harris as a co-coach. That sounds wonderful to anyone who is not a Nets fan.

Nets assistant coach Tom Barrise coached the team against the Lakers on Sunday night in Los Angeles and will be in charge Wednesday against Dallas at home when New Jersey goes 0-18, which would represent the worst start to a season in NBA history. Kiki will take over after the name Vandeweghe does not appear in the record books and will get the team ready to play Charlotte on Friday.

Kiki and Harris worked together as assistants in Dallas on Don Nelson’s staff and developed a close bond during that time.

Lawrence Frank Denied His Shot At History

13-0 To 0-16

13-0 To 0-16

The NBA has fired it’s second head coach prior to reaching the 20 game mark, that’s a coach every ten games. The New Jersey Nets was the latest team after the denied coach Lawrence Frank a chance to make history. The Nets went ahead and achieved it without the coach that lead them to zero wins in their first 16 games.

The undermanned, under-talented Nets matched the worst start to an NBA season with their 106-87 loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles. The Nets 0-17 start matched the 1988-89 Miami Heat and the 1999 Los Angeles Clippers.

Frank was setup to fail in 2009 after management decided not to touch the roster or spend a dime after draft night, who closes out on this team? Management went publicly and said wins didn’t matter cause he was playing with a wounded squad and now wins matter.

Frank took over for Byron Scott, his friend and boss, when Scott was fired in early 2004. The Nets proceeded to go 13-0, setting a NBA record for most consecutive wins by a head coach to begin a coaching career. He finished with a regular season record of 225-241 and in the playoff he was 18-20.

Tom Barrise took over for Frank and has served as his assistant since the start of his tenure in early 2004, could be just a one-game replacement as it’s rumored Nets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe could be Frank’s replacement for the rest of the season.

When will Rod Thorn have to answer for his legacy and I’m not talking about the lucky legacy of getting Michael Jordan?

Philadelphia 76ers Seek The Help Of NHL To Help Sell Tickets

Charles Barkley Is Rolling Over In His Grave

Charles Barkley Is Rolling Over In His Grave

This year the city of Phildelphia has seen some all time records for attendence of the Phillies, Eagles and even the Flyers but where is the 76ers? That’s because the 76ers are setting records for attendence but all time lows. The Sixers have the worst attendance mark in the NBA, drawing fewer fans (11,451 per home game), that even trails the winless New Jersey Nets and the often pathetic franchise of the Los Angeles Clippers.

The team is down almost 30 percent from last year, the largest year-over-year decrease in the league.

Comcast which owns the Sixers, the Flyers, the Wachovia Center and the cable network that televises both teams is using the Flyers to help spike the 76ers numbers. Going forward when a Flyer fan purchasestwo tickets to an upcoming game, a pair of Sixers tickets will be included. The Flyers rank No. 3 in NHL attendance and has sold more than 99 percent of its seats through 12 home games. Interestingly, the ad for the Flyers-Sixers combo deal is at the very bottom of the Flyers home page but is at the very top of Sixers.com.

Overall NBA attendance this season is down two percent, but that figure is a little misleading because many teams have slashed prices for less-desirable seats or are just handing out tickets for free. The Charlotte Bobcats gave away hundreds of tickets for the team’s season opener, and earlier this week, the Nets offered two free passes to all of the team’s existing customers for Tuesday’s night game against the Indiana Pacers and still played before a half empty arena.

The San Antonio Spurs are even down 8% from last years numbers at this point.

NBA Attendance Only Down 2% Despite Economy

Est. 1946

Est. 1946

It’s fairly earlier so don’t shoot the messenger but the numbers are out for early attendance in the NBA and despite the economy and the earliness of the season they are only down 2% from this point last year. Also the statistic is skewed by two teams, the Philadelphia 76ers and Memphis Grizzlies, who are drawing less than 70 percent.

The 76ers averaged 15,802 in 2008-’09, in five home games this season they’ve averaged 11,377, and are down more than 20 percent of capacity from last year. The Memphis Grizzlies ranked 29th in attendance last year only filling 70 percent of their arena are now only filling 66 percent, only outdrawing the 76ers. The Detroit Pistons have cause for concern, dropping from first in average attendance to 16th, falling 19.6 percent. The Spurs, a team retooled and trying to avenge their first round playoff exit rank 12th but are down 8%

Not all is doom and gloom as the Chicago Bulls are up over 100 percent of capacity after filling 97.7 percent of the United Center last season. The Cleveland Cavilers are in a similar boat, selling out each home game so far after drawing 97.3 percent last season. The Atlanta Hawks have seen significant gains, rising from 89.4 to 95.4 percent. Even the Minnesota Timberwolves fans are showing support no that Kevin McHale is ruining their team by filling their stadium by 8% more than last season.

BLOCK CITY: Your Victim-Courtney Lee

Dwight Howard, you have been charged with the crime of Representin.

And the verdict is Guilty.

The Russian’s Are Already Here

Is Andrei Kirilenko Included?

Is Andrei Kirilenko Included?

Apparently the Russians are already on our block as Russia’s richest man Mikhail Prokhorov has a deal to buy a controlling interest in the New Jersey Nets to become the first non-North American NBA owner. Prokhorov has an estimated net worth of $9.5 billion, after his fortune shrank by $7 billion, and according to the agreement will acquire 80 percent of the NBA team, 45 percent of the Brooklyn arena project.

NBA commissioner David The Goon” Stern praised the move, saying it will help the NBA expand globally (so all the critics that think the issue of NBA players playing for their countries in the off season will be addressed in the CBA, I think not) and ensures that the Nets, will have a new arena.

“Interest in basketball and the NBA is growing rapidly on a global basis, and we are especially encouraged by Mr. Prokhorov’s commitment to the Nets and the opportunity it presents to continue the growth of basketball in Russia,” Stern said in a statement.

Bruce Ratner and Prokhorov said in the joint statement they hope to have the sale completed by the first quarter of 2010. The NBA will review the proposal, and the deal must be approved by three-fourths of the NBA’s board of governors.

“I have a long-standing passion for basketball and pursuing interests that forward the development of the sport in Russia,” Prokhorov said in a statement.

Prokhorov is no stranger to American culture either, it will be interesting to work with the man who was murdered on the “Ether” track.

The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming!

I Must Break You

I Must Break You

A report that Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov was preparing an offer in the neighborhood of $700 million to a majority stake in the New Jersey Nets franchise and help build current team owner Bruce Ratner’s Barclays Center project, the Nets arena in Brooklyn, New York. Prokhorov is Russia’s richest man, at assets around $9.5 billion.

But more importantly for Ratner is a decision by the state of Court of Appeals on protests by Brooklyn residents to block the state’s use of eminent domain on behalf of the developer, a resolution is expected this winter.

Pat Riley & Erik Spoelstra Take Pay Cuts To Save Jobs

The Action Is At The Other End Pat

What's A Sega Genesis?

Seemingly every NBA franchise is cinching its belts these days. The Charlotte Bobcats skipped Summer League. The Memphis Grizzlies discarded their amateur scouting core. The Sacramento Kings left a benchwarmer Kenny Thomas at home on road trips last season to save on accommodations. The New Jersey Nets sold an ad on practice jerseys and tried to juice ticket sales by giving away LeBron James jerseys.

But the Miami Heat have decided to instead of cutting jobs to take it to another level having everyone in basketball ops, including president Pat Riley and head coach Erik Spoelstra take a pay cut. The salary reductions will apparently save the team from laying off anyone on the basketball side. As Riley and Spoelstra figure to be some of the most highly paid Heat employees who don’t wear a jersey, it seems fair. While Spoelstra’s staff will return intact, all will operate at salaries significantly lower than last season.

Seeking to avoid the type of layoffs that cost the business side of the team’s operation about 20 jobs in May, Heat President Pat Riley instead asked those on the basketball side of the team’s operation to voluntarily accept pay cuts ranging from two percent to 20 percent. The cuts, which include everyone from the team’s media-relations staff to the scouting staff to the executive staff, will cost Spoelstra and Riley well into the six figures.

The NBA is forecasting a revenue decrease of five to 10 percent this coming season.

Now if the Players Union would only allow Jermaine O’Neal to take a pay cut to his salary.

Stephen Jackson Says He’s Done, Get Him Outta There

But I Did Get Paid ThoughGolden State Warriors captain Stephen Jackson has confirmed that he has requested to be traded to a playoff contending team pronto and has provided a list of such clubs.

“Um…I don’t think I’ll be a Warrior next year. I’m looking to leave…at this point, I’m 31 years old. I have four or five years left, I want to be in a situation where I can continually be in the playoffs and get another ring. So that’s where my mind is at now.”

Jackson specifically mentioned Cleveland Cavaliers, any of the three teams in Texas and the New York Knicks as the teams he’d like to play for. I personally didn’t get the memo that the Knicks where a playoff team. It’s a good thing he chose to sign a $28 million dollar extension in November guaranteeing him: $8.4 million in 2010/11;  $9.2 million in 2011/12;  $10 million in 2012/13

In nine seasons he’s played with the New Jersey Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers and the Warriors. But in the past five years Jackson has been charged with felony criminal recklessness and a number of other misdemeanors, including assault, disorderly conduct, and two counts of battery.

Glad to hear just three years removed from the playoffs, two years of missing the eighth seed but two games and nine months after signing your $28 million dollar extension you want to leave.

Former San Antonio Spur Leaps For Overseas

estudiantesmadridThis week alone the total of NBA players going overseas to play basketball has reached 4. Today we learn of former San Antonio Spurs point guard Blake Ahearn deciding to sign with Estudiantes Madrid of the Spain League. In San Antonio he was some what of a fan favorite. The Spurs did initially see slight potential as they sent him to the Austin Toros, which he made the All-Star team.cajasol2

The Spain League kept up its pursuit of NBA players when Cajasol Sevilla signed New Jersey Nets Maurice Ager who was a first round pick by the Dallas Mavericks in 2006 when he came out of Michigan State. He ended up with the Nets due to he was one of the players involved in the Jason Kidd trade.

2 more NBA players leaped for overseas already this week. This is To Be Continued….
