Now that Floyd Mayweather has officially signed with Showtime boxing, the fine folks that run the station decided to present the boxer with a cake of a $1000 bill with his face on it.
Danny Green became Floyd Mayweather’s best friend Tuesday night. Green drained a go-ahead, eventual game-winning three-pointer with 9.3 seconds left to help the San Antonio Spurs narrowly defeat the Los Angeles Lakers.
While Green helped most Spurs fans win the small feat of happiness, the 6-6 guard helped Money Mayweather win a lot more.
A lot more…as in $275,000.
Mayweather, who was in attendance at Staples Center, might have been the only non-Spurs fan jumping for joy. It surely wasn’t his biggest bet ever placed, but it was still a huge win. And this was actually a smart bet, too. The Spurs are 7-1 and the Lakers are obviously going through a coaching change after firing Mike Brown. That’s a much safer call than when Mayweather most famously lost $3 million by betting on Michigan against Alabama. The Wolverines lost that game 44-14, but Mayweather lost a lot more.
“Kobe Bryant is a living legend but I bet $275k on Spurs and Danny Green got me that green,” he tweeted.
Floyd Mayweather will hope Michigan is hailing the victors in Saturday night’s mammoth matchup with Alabama. The boxer wagered more than $2.9 million in nine different Las Vegas sportsbooks on Michigan beating the 14-point spread against favored Alabama on Saturday night.
The 35-year-old boxer has been known to make big wagers in the past, including winning bets on the Los Angeles Clippers in a regular season game ($1.9 million) and against Tim Tebow’s Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional playoffs ($1 million).
“I’ve won a lot of money on games, I’ve lost a good piece of money on games,” Mayweather said in April.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. sat on his private jet counting out $1 million dollars while someone filmed it so the the whole world could see.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be released from jail in Las Vegas as early as Thursday night, a Las Vegas police spokesman said. The unbeaten world super-welterweight champion, has been jailed inside Clark County Detention Center since June 1 for a 2010 domestic violence crime against the mother of his three children.
He was sentenced to 90 days in jail but was eligible for early release based on good behavior. Jail officials informed Mayweather’s attorney that additional inmates might accelerate the boxer’s release.
Mayweather (43-0, 26 knockouts) had his jail sentence postponed from earlier this year so he could fight Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto, whom Mayweather, 35, defeated by unanimous decision May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
It is unclear whom Mayweather will fight next, or when.
Floyd Mayweather’s demands that he be released from jail because the poor quality of the food and water has threatened his health were denied by a Las Vegas judge who says he should eat and drink what is being given to him behind bars.
Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa wrote in her late Wednesday decision that water has been made available to Mayweather around the clock and the only reason he isn’t eating properly is because he refuses to eat the provided meals.
Saragosa said Mayweather’s complaints that he is unable to exercise in jail also are invalid because he has been “provided sufficient space and time for physical activity if he so chooses.”
“This court finds, and the defendant admits, there is nothing illegal about the defendant’s sentence in this case,” Saragosa wrote.
A mere 12 days after Mayweather turned himself in to begin his three-month sentence, his legal team filed an emergency motion Monday asking the court to put him under house arrest or move him into the general jail population — something that jail officials had avoided to protect the celebrity fighter. The motion claimed the undefeated champion might never fight again because he was getting out of shape in solitary confinement.
Mayweather lawyer Richard Wright said earlier this week that he was not seeking special treatment for the 35-year-old fighter.
Mayweather pleaded guilty last year to reduced domestic battery charges stemming from an attack on his former girlfriend while two of their children watched. The plea deal allowed him to avoid trial on felony charges that could have gotten Mayweather up to 34 years in prison if he was convicted.
Mayweather was sentenced Dec. 22, but was allowed to remain free long enough to make a Cinco de Mayo weekend fight.
Mayweather’s legal team told the court this week that his personal physician, Dr. Robert Voy, visited the jail Friday and determined that the fighter appeared to have lost muscle tone. Voy estimated Mayweather was consuming fewer than 800 calories a day instead of his usual 3,000 or 4,000 calories. Mayweather also wasn’t drinking enough because he wasn’t allowed bottled water and doesn’t enjoy tap water.
“I am concerned about Floyd withdrawing, developing anger he cannot dissipate through the usual means of dedicated exercise and training,” Voy wrote in an affidavit. “Boxing has been Mr. Mayweather’s life since he was a young man and we need champions of this type to continue to their natural retirement and hopefully their contributions to society thereafter.”
Prosecutor Lisa Luzaich scoffed at the complaints during a court hearing Tuesday.
“It’s jail,” Luzaich told the court. “Where did he think he was going? The Four Seasons?”
Manny Pacquiao probably won’t fight Floyd Mayweather Jr in his prime but he is ready to take on President Obama.
The boxing champion, who has been outspoken about his religious convictions in recent months, has challenged the president on the issue of same-sex marriage.
In an interview with the National Conservative Examiner, Pacquiao stated his position on the issue:
“God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they are in love with each other.
“It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of Old.”
Pacquiao also invoked Old Testament, and recited Leviticus 20:13, saying: “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”
In February, Pacquiao announced “I am no longer in the vice business” and that he would no longer engage in cockfighting or gambling.
Last year he also said that, as a member of Congress in the Philippines, he would oppose legislation aimed at making condoms and family planning advice more readily available.
“It’s sinful to use condoms and commit abortion,” Pacquiao said last May.
When Floyd Mayweather Jr speaks its almost as entertaining as watching him fight. Talking to David Mayo of mlive.com, the fighter was in rare form talking about his past, present and future.
“…Do I think age is going to play a factor? At this particular time, I can’t say,” comments Mayweather. “Once I go out there and that bell rings, then we’ll have to see.”
That may be because vampires don’t age.
“I smell that blood, I taste it,” Mayweather said after hurting a sparring partner. “I crave that blood. I’m a vampire.”
Later, when another sparring partner challenged him verbally, Mayweather was equal to the task.
“My check looks like your Social Security number,” Mayweather said.
Mike Tyson can’t understand why Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have never agreed to have the fight the world wants to see. Tyson addressed that failure on WXYT in Detroit, and offered up a solution of sorts, saying:
“Listen if I was president I would throw them in jail if they didn’t fight. I’d have them arrested. You can’t do that but that’s what I would try to do. I’d be like, ‘These guys need to get locked up and find a new profession until they get their heads clear.’ ”
On the topic of Tyson being president, the former champ also readily conceded that, “If I was president of the United States I would have to impeach myself.”
Tyson did beg off on a question about what’s the one thing he’d change about his past.
“Oh no I don’t want anything to change,” Tyson said. “If anything changed and my ego got any bigger and inflamed I’d probably be dead or something so everything turned out the right way. I became humble because this is what I had to learn, if you’re not humble in this world, the world will thrust humbleness upon you.”
As for whether we’ll be seeing him play himself again in a Hangover III movie, Tyson said, “I was told there was one and I would like to participate in it but we will see what happens.”
It’s NBA All Star weekend and boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr is one of many celebrities in Orlando for the festivities. Mayweather sat court side for the three point and Sprite Slam Dunk contest with his friend and rapper 50 Cent. That however wasn’t what got everyones head to turn, no, it was he decided to show up wearing a Cosby sweater.
It’s actually a Coogi sweater and he’s not the first athlete to wear one but it seems that way since JaMarcus Russell was caught wearing them all the time.
There was a time when a Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr fight seemed inevitable, just because of the record gate it would generate. But now Pacquiao hinting that his retirement is on the horizon.
In comments translated by MindaNews.com in the Philippines, Pacquiao indicated that continuing in the ring puts him at odds with his new-found dedication to the Catholic religion.
“It’s not right that I share God’s word and at the same time hurt other people. I’ve gained more than enough blessings these past years so I think it’s time for me to return the favor,” Pacquiao said.
Pacquiao recently accepted an invitation to become an ambassador for the Catholic Church. He also announced he was “no longer in the vice business,” and would sell his interest in a casino while also getting rid of his collection of about 1,000 fighting roosters.
Minda News also reports that Pacquiao’s mother has asked him several times to quit boxing and Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, said last year that he expected Pacquiao to retire by the end of 2013.
Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr caused a stir earlier this week when he said all the hype surrounding New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin was because he was Asian. Philadelphia 76ers forward Andre Iguodala listens to the Sports Grind Entertainment on iHeart Radio and went one further than Calvin Casey’s explanation of the Williams sisters to the tennis game and said Lin is like a black hockey player.
“Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he’s Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don’t get the same praise,” Mayweather wrote.
Iguodala agreed Lin’s race, as he is the first Asian-American to start an NBA game, has factored in the attention he is receiving, but did not want to detract from what the former Harvard star was achieving on the court.
“When you see the majority doing it you say, ‘Ah, he’s been doing it since he was a kid. It’s in his blood, whatever. You see Lin doing it and you say, ‘You’re serious?’ It’s kind of like seeing a black hockey player doing well. Race does play a role in it but at the same time you have to respect it, that’s how I feel. You have to respect it whether you like it or not. It’s a feel-good story.”
Lin hit a game-winning three with less than a second on the clock against the Toronto Raptors Tuesday and then added a career high 13 assists against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday.
His No. 17 jersey has become the league’s top seller, while Madison Square Garden Co.’s share price has soared to an all-time high.
Iguodala said the interesting thing will be seeing if Lin can maintain his success long-term.
“He’s only six games in the league. Game 30, game 40, that’s where you can kind of see where a guy’s at,” he said.
Boxer Floyd Mayweather believes that New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin is getting national attention because of his race, rather than his exceptional play.
“Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he’s Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don’t get the same praise,” Mayweather wrote on his Twitter account on Monday afternoon.
Lin, an Asian American, is the first American-born player of Taiwanese or Chinese descent to play in the NBA. Lin’s parents emigrated from Taiwan in the 1970s. A grandmother remained in mainland China.
Mayweather has drawn attention for racially insensitive remarks in the past. Mayweather went on a profanity-filled racist and homophobic rant against Manny Pacquiao in September 2010. In a video posted on UStream, Mayweather told Pacquiao, a Filipino, to “make some sushi rolls and cook some rice.” He also said “we’re going to cook him with some cats and dogs.”
Manny Pacquiao knows there are a lot of barriers to his fighting Floyd Mayweather and now he wants to make it clear that he is not one of them.
“I am meeting with my promoter, Bob Arum (today) and I will insist that the fight with Mayweather be given the preference than the four others in the list I will fight next,” Pacquiao told Eddie Alinea of Philboxing.com.
Pacquiao said “it’s not really for some quarters to blame me if, in the long run, the fight wouldn’t push through. … I fight for the fans. I want the fans to be happy always.”
Mayweather, who will be serving a 90-day prison sentence, is cleared to fight in May at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas but Arum would prefer a November date at a bigger site.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department have supplied a photo of the single-inmate cell at the Clark County Detention Center. It is the type of cell that champion boxer Floyd Mayweather will reside when he begins his 90-day sentence. Mayweather pleaded guilty to a domestic violence charge and no contest to two harassment charges involving his wife.
Former NBA superstar, rapper, actor, and Deputy Shaquille O’Neill revealed in a radio interview this week that he is in negotiations to make his pro wrestling debut in Miami for Wrestlemania 28. Shaq told the Abe Kanan show that he is negotiating with the WWE to go one on one with The Big Show, following up an angle June 2009 on RAW.
“This would mark The Big Show’s second WrestleMania match against a sports celebrity,” the report notes. “Show wrestled boxing great Floyd Mayweather, Jr. at WrestleMania 24 in a match that was a lot better than most people expected it to be.”
The report also goes on to warn that the WWE is not happy that this news has leaked and may reconsider, since the whole point of Shaq showing up was that it would be a surprise. But either way, the The Rock is already set to wrestle John Cena for the big night.
After a controversial finish in which Floyd Mayweather Jr knocked out Victor Ortiz while Ortiz appeared to be apologizing for a head butt, Mayweather told HBO’s Larry Merchant in a post-fight interview that he knew “shit” about boxing and should be fired.
After becoming irritated with Merchant’s questions about the fight’s conclusion, Mayweather interrupted, “You don’t never give me a fair shake. So I’m gonna let you talk to Victor Ortiz, alright? I’m through. Put somebody else up here to give me an interview. HBO need to fire you because you don’t know shit about boxing. You ain’t shit.”
After Mayweather’s comments, the 80-year-old commentator said, “I wish I was 50 years younger and I would kick your ass.”
Tonight is the night that Floyd Mayweather Jr. puts his 41-0 record on the line against Victor Ortiz in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather no doubt comes in the favorite but hasn’t fought in 16 months and that layoff or just perhaps Ortiz himself has caused Mayweather to act a little out of character this time around. It’s something the constant cameras of HBO’s series 24/7 has been able to provide a glimpse of. However nothing was more out of character for Mayweather than what was on display at the weigh-in when he placed his hands on Ortiz’s neck and tried to choke him.
Technically Buffalo Bills wide receiver Steve Johnson’s hasn’t yet turned 25 as his birthday isn’t until Friday but he sure has joined in the athlete birthday cake crazy with a BIG bang. Definitely in the running along with boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr as the best cake we’ve ever displayed on this site.
The 39-year old boxer Shane Mosley has lost 3 of his last 6 boxing fights and lost another fight in the court room. Mosley has been ordered to give up 3 WBA Welterweight Super Champion Title belts to his ex-wife Jin Mosley. She is ordered to give one to each of the 3 children when they turn 18.
Under California’s Community property laws, the settlement will be a 50-50 split on everything from any fight purses and royalties during the time of their marriage together to credit card points. So any fight paydays that Shane had during the time of his marriage she will receive half of it. They however were not together at the time of some of Mosley’s biggest paydays which happen to include the Floyd Mayther Jr and Manny Pacquiao fights.
Anthony Cliff claims boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr directed his bodyguards to attack him at a Las Vegas casino last year after the man asked about a long awaited showdown with Manny Pacquiao, according to a lawsuit in state court in Las Vegas.
The lawsuit alleges Mayweather’s bodyguards attacked Cliff of Las Vegas near a valet parking stand at the Palms Casino Resort on March 27, 2010, after Mayweather accused Cliff of “disrespecting” him.
Mayweather’s bodyguards allegedly struck Cliff in the face, slamming his head into the ground. They then kicked him repeatedly in his back and side, the lawsuit says.
The lawsuit accuses Mayweather of assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent hiring, training, supervision and retention of employees.
