Dallas Mavericks Rick Carlisle Uses Ping Pong Paddle Against Cancer

He Needs You
If your playing in your garage or at your local YMCA, you probably call it ping pong but if your an enthusiast like Rudy J you refer to it as table tennis. Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle also an avid player is using table tennis to raise money to fight a pancreatic cancer.
Carlisle who in the last 12 months watched as he lost two very good friends, former Detroit Pistons coach Chuck Daly, and Indiana Pacers co-owner Melvin Simon succumbed to the disease. Pancreatic cancer is the most under-screened, but most aggressive form of cancer there is. ‘When the director of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, called Carlisle about participating in a fund-raising event, he instantly raised his ping-pong paddle and wanted to do something different from the typical bowling or golf fundraisers.
If you had followed Sports Grind Entertainment for some time you are well aware that the fight against cancer is something that holds deeply to our heart. So if your in the Dallas weekend stop in on the Purple Ping Pong event on Sunday at SMU’s Moody Coliseum from 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. Ping-pong tables will be set up on the floor of Moody that will include numerous local table-tennis professionals and Olympians taking part in an invitational tournament in the center of the floor.

San Antonio Spurs Top 9 Worst Injuries Of All Time

1996-97: The Gift & The Curse
The latest injury to San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker, a broken the fourth metacarpal in his shooting hand, has cost him the rest of the regular season in a year that has already plagued him with plantar fasciitis, spraining both ankles, a strained hip flexor and food poisoning.
With the Spurs currently hanging onto the Western Conference seventh seed that already has many questioning their chances in the playoffs and with this latest injury it will sure cast a greater shadow of doubt. While injuries are part of the game, what have been the 9 most damaging to the Spurs franchise? Why 9? In honor of Tony.
- 9. Tony Parker 2009-10 season
Parker an NBA Finals MVP season looked shaky from the start when he suffered his first injury in a year that was filled with many. While playing overseas in the off-season for France against Hungary in Eurobasketball Parker turned his ankle. The bug was cast before the season even started but stayed with him until March 6 in Memphis, where his regular season came to end. Parker sat out numerous games in the year to a variety of injuries: plantar fasciitis, a strained hip flexor, spraining both ankles and food poisoning.
- 8. James Silas 1976-76 season
Possibly one of the best Spurs of all-time that the NBA never had a chance to see at his peak. In the last season ABA before the merger Captain Late broke his ankle by landing on the foot of New Jersey Nets guard Brian Taylor in the ABA Finals. Recovered and ready for the Spurs first season in the NBA he suffered a cartilage tear in his knee restricting him to play in only 22 games for a Spurs team that was poised to contend. Silas played only 37 games the following season and was out of the league in four years.
- 7. Manu Ginobili 2008-09 season
One of the greatest to put on a Spurs jersey was injured in the semi-finals of the Beijing Olympics. The injury carried through to the NBA season and limited him to appear only in 44 regular season games and missed the entire playoffs. San Antonio went in as the third seed with a 54–28 record but was eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round 4–1 the earliest exit since 2000.
- 6. Johnny Dawkins 1988-89 season
Originally drafted with the 10th overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft the former Duke all time leading scorer and Naismith College Player of the Year was suppose to be the point guard of the future for the Spurs and coach Larry Brown. Durring the 88-89 season he started to suffer from a nerve injury in his left leg and foot that allowed him to only see action in 32 games. The nerve injury in his leg would eventually force him to retire from the game.
- 5. Terry Cummings 1992-93 season
In a season in which the Spurs improved on its record and advanced out of the first round they did so with limited minutes from one of their best scorers in Cummings. In the off-season Cummings tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during a pickup game that forced him to miss the first 74 regular season games. Upon his return, he could no longer put up All-Star numbers he was accustomed and from then on was used in a role much like a reserve.
- 4. Derek Anderson 2000-01 season
Anderson was a vital part in the Spurs plans of providing outside help to Tim Duncan and David Robinson averaging 15 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists per game on the wing. The Spurs looked to be on their way to earining a second NBA championship in 3 years as the stars where lining up until Dallas Mavericks Juwan Howard drew a flagrant foul on Anderson. He separated his right shoulder when he drove for the basket and Howard swung his arm into Anderson’s side that caused him to land on his shoulder. He missed the rest of the Mavericks series and returned in the conference finals against the in limited minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers. Anderson and the Spurs where caught in a no win situation since it wasn’t adequate enough time for him to heal.
- 3. Tim Duncan 1999-2000 season
In the Spurs first chance at trying to repeat as champions after winning their first NBA championship, they entered the playoffs without Duncan. He was averaging 23 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game in a season that he had earned co-MVP with Shaquille O’Neal during the All-Star Game. However Duncan injured his meniscus shortly before the end of the regular season against the Sacramento Kings. The injury forced him to miss the playoffs and the Spurs saw them lose to the Phoenix Suns 3–1 in the first round. Without Duncan the Spurs relied on Malik Rose and Jerome Kersey to play alongside David Robinson but in the series they saw them go down as well with injuries.
- 2. Johnny Moore 1986-87 season
An assist man, who lead the league in that category in 1981-82, a steal man, an all around NBA player in his first five season with the Spurs. Moore often found the open man and wasn’t afraid to make the extra pass as he is one of only three players in teams history to record 20 assists during a game was hospitalized December 26,1986 with the devastating disease, Desert Fever. Doctors warned him that the disease could be fatal. Desert Fever luckily did not cost his life but ended up costing his basketball career as Moore lost three years of playing. He finally was able to return to the court to play in 53 games during 1989-90 season, which would be his last.
- 1. David Robinson 1996-97 season
The year that will be known as the gift and curse for the Spurs franchise. That season saw Robinson hurt his back in the preseason, an injury that would plagued him the rest of his career, limited him to 6 games before breaking a bone in his foot. He wound up missing the entire season and the Spurs finished 20-62. The curse is it cost the Spurs their best player in franchise history and their season but the gift came in the form of ping pong balls and the drafting of Tim Duncan out of Wake Forest University with the number one overall pick.
Is there a Spurs injury you believe that was missed to be of greater significant than these 9? Feel free to leave your feedback.
San Antonio Spurs Waive Michael Finley

[Via Spurs Press Release
To honor Michael Finley’s request to be released from his contract, the San Antonio Spurs waived the veteran guard. This move will allow Finley to sign with another team and be eligible to participate in the 2010 NBA Playoffs.
“Michael Finley was an outstanding professional during his time with the Spurs,” said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. “Both on and off the court he was great example for all to follow.”
The 6-7, 225-lb Finley appeared in 347 games over five seasons with San Antonio. He averaged 9.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 25.3 minutes while shooting .417 (1,212-2,905) from the field, .382 (490-1,282) from three-point land and .849 (309-364) from the line. Finley ranks fourth all-time for the Spurs in three-pointers made and attempted. In 55 postseason games with San Antonio he averaged 9.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 26.9 minutes per game.
Finley was originally signed by the Spurs on 9/2/05. The two-time All-Star has also spent time with the Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks. Over his 15-year NBA career, he has appeared in 1,082 games and has averaged 15.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 34.8 minutes. Finley has also appeared in 101 career postseason games and averaged 13.0, 3.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 33.3 minutes.
Dick Move Or Brilliant Move By Jason Kidd?
Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson did draw a technical in which Dallas Mavericks Dirk Nowitzki made the free throw. The game eventually went into overtime where the Mavericks beat the Hawks 111-103.
So was Mavericks guard Jason Kidd’s play a dick move or a brilliant one, I’ll let the opinion be left up to you.
But what ever your opinion is, don’t overlook the stat that Kidd pulled in his 104th career triple-double, by posting 19 points, 17 assists, 16 rebounds. Only three players have ever laid down a 15-15-15. Kidd did it back in 1996 with a 21-16-16 and the other two where Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.
Caron Butler Says Goodbye To The District Of Columbia

Class Act
The District of Columbia’s tears will be a little more heavier tonight knowing that a man who represented their city to the world now calls Dallas home.
When you get traded, you don’t get time to say goodbye. More important, you don’t get the opportunity to say, “Thank you.”
Thank you, to some of the best fans in the world. Representing you and representing this city has been an honor I will always cherish.
During my 4 1/2 years as a Wizard, I learned many valuable lessons, especially how to give back to the community. The most rewarding part of my time in Washington was meeting the incredible people of this city, and I will miss you all. Thank you to the countless individuals who helped me with the annual Coats for Kids, the Bike Brigade and my basketball camp. The memories are many and will never be replaced.
When I came to Washington, I dreamed of winning a championship. I thought I would play the rest of my career in this city, retire a Wizard and one day see my number hanging from the rafters at Verizon Center. I have learned that in basketball, as in life, nothing is guaranteed.
Thank you for the memories. My family and I will treasure them forever. Washington will always hold a special place in my heart.

Josh Howard Takes DNP Due To Hangover

Smooth
Josh Howard’s lack of production and past infractions may have set things in motion long ago, but the inciting moment that may have led to Howard’s ticket out of Dallas seems to be a DNP-due to hangover.
Several Maverick sources said Howard had a long night of partying on January 19, the night after the Mavericks had won in Boston and less than 24 hours before playing the Washington Wizards. The team officially said he missed the game against Washington on Jan. 20 with a stomach illness. But team officials said that it was a self-inflicted game off.
It certainly be the first time that Howard partying has drawn criticism as his notorious 2008 birthday party that he threw during a playoff series in which the Mavs were getting creamed by the New Orleans Hornets drew the fire from then-coach Avery Johnson and Mavs’ management. Oh, and then there the YouTube video about the national anthem. And the drag racing. And the admission of marijuana use.
Dallas Mavericks & Washington Wizards Complete 7 Player Trade

Moving Day
The Washington Wizards completed a blockbuster seven player deal with the Dallas Mavericks. The Wizards sent Caron Butler, Bredan Haywood, DeShawn Stevenson and cash considerations to Dallas for Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton.
For Dallas this trade gives them hope in of knocking off the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs. this spring.Butler is a significant upgrade over Howard, who had fallen out of favor with Dallas and struggled this season. Butler’s salary for next season of $10.6 million is pretty reasonable given what he brings to the table. Haywood also gives the Mavs a defensive center who can give Dallas some toughness inside now that Erick Dampier is dealing with some soreness in his knee. Haywood has long been criticized for inconsistent play but is still a starting-quality center that teamed up with Jason Kidd, I think you’ll see Haywood surprise a lot of people. Stevenson helps the Mavericks in depth department.
On the flip side, Wizards’ GM Ernie Grunfeld continues to perplex me. When he was running the Bucks, he was the mastermind behind the disastrous Ray Allen-for-Gary Payton swap, and in the last two years, he signed Gilbert Arenas to an outlandish contract (for a guy coming off of knee surgery) and now, in an effort to “rebuild,” he’s trading away a very good 29-year-old small forward for a decent 29-year-old small forward. For Washington, this is a clear cost-cutting move that will save the Wizards about $13.5 million in salary next season it could be more but I don’t see Ross declining his player option on $1.1 million.
The players physicals were waived, meaning every player should be in their new uniforms right after the All-Star break.
Wizards: Losers/Mavericks: Winners
Avery Johnson Gets His Hands On The Lombardi Trophy
Former San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson, who was born and raised in New Orleans, managed to get his hands on the Vince Lombardi trophy as Saints head coach Sean Payton worked his way back to the locker room.
There’s no question about it Payton surely couldn’t have done it without the Little General.
Dallas Women Love Them Some Rudy Fernandez

Doesn't Get Any Easier Than That
Back on Saturday night the Portland Trail Blazers where in Dallas visiting the Mavericks but during a timeout with 41 seconds left in the fourth quarter two women walked onto the court to hug Rudy Fernandez.
One woman wrapped her arms around the waist of Blazers guard Fernandez from behind. Fernandez, who was not in the game but focused on the plays being diagrammed by coach Nate McMillan, was stunned.
“I was surprised,’’ Fernandez said. “I was listening to the coach on the bench and behind me, she touches me and says, ‘Rudy, I love you. Nice to meet you. Good game.’
“I said, ‘What?’’
Blazers guard Jerryd Bayless, who was on the perimeter of the huddle, said he saw the whole event transpire.
“They were drunk, obviously,’’ Bayless said. “I was actually close to Rudy, but when I saw them coming, and once they got onto the court, I stepped back.’’
The women were ushered away from the huddle, and amazingly allowed to return to their courtside seats under the basket and watch the remainder of the game, which went to overtime. McMillan said he hadn’t heard of the incident, but was wide-eyed when told the details on Tuesday.
“What about security?’’ McMillan asked. “That’s not good. I mean, really. If they came out on the floor …’’
So the women where allowed to return to their seats? Yep that’s some good security right there. Hope it’s a little for the All-Star game in two weeks.
NBA Announces All-Star Reserves

February 14, 2010
The NBA is set to announce the All-Star reserves during tonight’s TNT games but Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski got a hold of a leaked list of the 2010 NBA All-Star reserves
Eastern Conference Reserves:
Rajon Rondo – Boston Celtics
Derrick Rose – Chicago Bulls
Paul Pierce – Boston Celtics
Chris Bosh – Toronto Raptors
Gerald Wallace – Charlotte Bobcats
Joe Johnson – Atlanta Hawks
Al Horford – Atlanta Hawks
Western Conference Reserves:
Deron Williams – Utah Jazz
Chris Paul – New Orleans Hornets
Pau Gasol – Los Angeles Lakers
Kevin Durant – Oklahoma City Thunder
Dirk Nowitzki – Dallas Mavericks
Zach Randolph – Memphis Grizzlies
Brandon Roy – Portland Blazers
It will be the All-Star debuts for seven players: Williams of Utah, Chicago’s Rose, Boston’s Rondo, Charlotte’s Wallace, Memphis Randolph, Atlanta’s Horford and Oklahoma City’s Durant.
Among the notable candidates left off the team are the Los Angeles Clippers Chris Kaman, New York Knicks David Lee and Denver Nuggets Chauncey Billups.
Dirk Nowitzki Sells Jam Session Tickets
Wow, I never knew Dirk was a funny dude.
There’s a second video of his time in the booth selling tickets [here] but not quite as funny. Still good to see a superstar who not stiff as a board.
WTF: New York Knicks

Look Away
50! I’m not the NBA guru of Sports Grind Entertainment (that’s Rudy J department) but what the hell is up with the New York Knicks and this once proud organization. Losing by 50 is unacceptable in the professional ranks but at home is throwing up in mouth gross.
Where the Knicks eager to retreat back to their cribs to watch the New York Jets in the AFC Championship game? Maybe, however the story with the Knicks is nothing new in the last 9 or 10 years. The Knicks have changed players out like colostomy bags as well as going through coaches like Lenny Wilkens, Larry Brown and Isiah Thomas who was also forced out of the general manager spot. But with Donnie Walsh now in charge of that spot and Mike D’Antoni roaming the sidelines the Knicks still only stand at 17-23 in a very much manageable Eastern Conference.
Then you put the cherry on top come Sunday when allowing the Dallas Mavericks to drop 50 on you in front your own fans, which by the way keep the franchise third in NBA attendance.
So WTF!
Jerry Stackhouse Signs With Milwaukee Bucks

2 Time NBA All-Star
The Milwaukee Bucks have signed Jerry Stackhouse for the remainder of the season. He could see action as early as Wednesday.
Coach Scott Skiles says he will be activated for Wednesday’s game against Toronto Raptors. The Bucks are in need of a scoring threat after guard Michael Redd suffered a season-ending knee injury last Sunday.
The 35-year-old Stackhouse played in only 10 games for Dallas Mavericks last season. He was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in July, then became an unrestricted free agent the next day.
Now with Stackhouse on pretty much of a farewell tour of his career, did he ever really live up to the North Carolina hype and the number three selection overall.
Shawne Williams Charged With 8 Drug Counts

Here's Your Ticket Out The League
The recently traded Shawne Williams, who was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the New Jersey Nets for Eduardo Najera, was indicted on eight drug charges in Shelby County, Tennessee
Four counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and four counts of conspiracy to distribute the drug codeine.
Each crime is considered a felony and carries a sentence of 1-2 years. Williams was one of 24 defendants busted in a Memphis police sting.
Eduardo Najera Traded For Kris Humphries & Shawne Williams

Moving Day
I think Eduardo Najera is one of the most underappreciated NBA players in the last few years, the guy does a lot of dirty work and can play, now be that his talents are not the same from four years ago that doesn’t diminish his hard work and grind he puts in. Plus he attended Cornerstone Christian Academy High School in San Antonio.
The Dallas Mavericks must believe the same thing as they have traded Kris Humphries and Mavs headache Shawne Williams to re aquire Najera from the New Jersey Nets. The Mavericks will also save about $4.7 million on this deal, meaning a small luxury tax for owner Mark Cuban
The move for the Mavericks was really about getting rid of a headache in Williams because of his unprofessional attitude and with Tim Thomas,James Singleton, and Dirk Nowitzki, the power forward slot was pretty crowded was crowded for Humphries.
Najera, 33, was averaging 3.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 16 minutes per game.
Mavericks: Winners/ Nets: Losers
BLOCK CITY: Your Victim-Jason Terry
Richard Jefferson, you have been charged with the crime of Representin.
And the verdict is Guilty.
Mark Cuban Speaks The Truth In Describing The NFL

O No You Didn't
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is upset that the NFL and its television partners has scheduled the Cowboys home playoff game for Saturday night.
The timing conflicts with the Mavericks home game that night. The ‘Boys take on Philadelphia Eagles at 7 p.m. (CST) in Jerry’s World while his Mavericks play at home against the Utah Jazz at 7:30 p.m. and he anticipates a high number of no-shows. The Mavericks play Friday night at San Antonio, which eliminates the possibility of moving Saturday’s game up earlier in the day.
“I know we’re just little pissants compared to the NFL, but seriously, the NFL is turning into the ugly American when it comes to sports leagues,” Cuban said before Tuesday’s home game against Detroit. “They don’t give a crap about anybody but themselves.”
Word! Speak the truth Cuban!
Cuban continued to make his point on Twitter, pointing out that the Boston Celtics host the Toronto Raptors at 12 p.m. (CST) on Sunday, while the New England Patriots open their playoffs at home against the Baltimore Ravens… at the same time!
Cuban also made it clear that it’s not a shot at owner Jerry Jones but the league itself, a league that has never shown any interest in developing a scheduling cooperative with the NBA so each league can try to avoid overlapping.
“It’s not a Jerry Jones issue – Jerry’s great,” Cuban said. “But at some point in time, that will catch up to [the NFL] and hurt them in a big way.”
I love the NFL too but some of the NFL’s actions disgust me at times and I’ll gladly repeat myself in saying speak the truth Cuban!
Dallas Mavericks Dirk Nowitzki Plays Dentist
Who got it worse Carl Landry or Dirk Nowitzki?
WWE Wrestler Puts Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban Through Table
Does your team have an owner that gets into the act when the WWE uses their arenas to hosts their events? Probably not but Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban isn’t your typical owner.
Cuban became part of the show when he allowed some dude named Sheamus (aka The Celtic Warrior) with a fantastic lemmy beard, who I assume was still pissed off about France’s handball victory, put him through a table.
Could you imagine see San Antonio Spurs owner Peter Holt doing this?
Kiki Vandeweghe & Del Harris Take Over As Nets Head Coach
I always heard the stories of how Kiki Vandeweghe was a baller at UCLA but I missed out on that time and unforunatley saw A LOT of his pro career, for some stupid reason I thought the name Kiki was one of the coolest I had ever heard.
Now it seems I’ll be seeing more of Kiki as he has decided that no one else can right the sinking ship in New Jersey but himself, yeah good luck. The Nets have chosen him as the replacement for fired coach Lawrence Frank for the rest of the season.
It also seems that Kiki is going to lug around some old baggage as he has agreed to bring in longtime NBA coach Del Harris as a co-coach. That sounds wonderful to anyone who is not a Nets fan.
Nets assistant coach Tom Barrise coached the team against the Lakers on Sunday night in Los Angeles and will be in charge Wednesday against Dallas at home when New Jersey goes 0-18, which would represent the worst start to a season in NBA history. Kiki will take over after the name Vandeweghe does not appear in the record books and will get the team ready to play Charlotte on Friday.
Kiki and Harris worked together as assistants in Dallas on Don Nelson’s staff and developed a close bond during that time.
Toni Braxton Kicks Shannon Brown To Curb & Hooks Up With Ron Artest
Toni Braxton is back to messing around with NBA players but it’s not 1996 and Jason Kidd nor Jim Jackson are not involved. This time the Cougar has her sights set not on any Dallas Mavericks but Shannon Brown and Ron Artest of the Los Angles Lakers.
Reunion Arena Former Home Of The Dallas Mavericks Comes Crashing Down
Reunion Arena’s final stage of demolition happened on Tuesday and now all that is left is the memories of 1984 Slam Dunk Champion Spud Webb and anyone who witnessed a classic battle between the Freebirds and the Von-Erichs. I’m sure the San Antonio Spurs had probably wished the same would have happened to American Airlines Center after their overtime loss on Tuesday night.
Texas Stadium is now on the clock.
NBA Attendance Only Down 2% Despite Economy
It’s fairly earlier so don’t shoot the messenger but the numbers are out for early attendance in the NBA and despite the economy and the earliness of the season they are only down 2% from this point last year. Also the statistic is skewed by two teams, the Philadelphia 76ers and Memphis Grizzlies, who are drawing less than 70 percent.
The 76ers averaged 15,802 in 2008-’09, in five home games this season they’ve averaged 11,377, and are down more than 20 percent of capacity from last year. The Memphis Grizzlies ranked 29th in attendance last year only filling 70 percent of their arena are now only filling 66 percent, only outdrawing the 76ers. The Detroit Pistons have cause for concern, dropping from first in average attendance to 16th, falling 19.6 percent. The Spurs, a team retooled and trying to avenge their first round playoff exit rank 12th but are down 8%
Not all is doom and gloom as the Chicago Bulls are up over 100 percent of capacity after filling 97.7 percent of the United Center last season. The Cleveland Cavilers are in a similar boat, selling out each home game so far after drawing 97.3 percent last season. The Atlanta Hawks have seen significant gains, rising from 89.4 to 95.4 percent. Even the Minnesota Timberwolves fans are showing support no that Kevin McHale is ruining their team by filling their stadium by 8% more than last season.

Former Spur Accused Of Making Homophobic Remarks
Former San Antonio Spur and current Dallas Maverick Drew Gooden is being accused of making homophobic remarks to two hecklin’ Clippers fans after the Mavericks’ Saturday game in Los Angeles.
One of the Clippers fans happened to be actor Chris Wylde. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban reportedly emailed Wylde, saying the team would deal with Gooden. The Dallas Morning News reports that the NBA is currently investigating the matter.
