Rape Charges Dropped Against Garrett Wittels
The rape charges against Florida International baseball player Garrett Wittels were officially dropped on Monday by the Bahamian attorney general.
“It’s over. The fat lady has sung in the Bahamas,” said Richard Sharpstein, Wittels attorney. “This diabolical scheme to ruin the names of these young men and extort money is over.
The no prosecution was filed before a Bahamian magistrate. Authorities decided the evidence didn’t support prosecution. Wittels, Robert Rothschild and Jonathan Oberti were accused of raping a 17 year old teenage tourist in December. According to reports footage from the security camera appeared to contradict the women’s story.
Wittels went into this season riding a 56 game hitting streak but went 0 for 4 in the season opener ending his pursuit of NCAA history. He was two hits shy of Robin Ventura 58 game Division I record set in 1987.
