Quiznos Toasty Topic: Ben Roethlisberger
Every Wednesday Sports Grind Entertainment presents you with the Quiznos Toasty Topic. Today the toasty topic to be discussed is the situation surrounding Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
Earlier in the week Roethlisberger learned that he would not be charged with sexual assault, because Ocmulgee district attorney Fred Bright said that the charge could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Roethlisberger who was accused of the sexual assault in early March by a college student in Milledgeville, Georgia at a nightclub. Roethlisberger admitted to having sexual contact with his accuser while his bodyguards blocked access to the bathroom in which the sexual encounter took place.
While Roethlisberger would not not face criminal charges, he still had to meet with NFL commissioner Roger “Godfather” Goodell yesterday on whether he would face a suspension or other any disciplinary measures. The meeting with in Manhattan was productive but there was no hint on whether any disciplinary actions would come about.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello says the league will review the facts and will follow up with Roethlisberger and the Steelers but no time line is to be set. The possible options include a suspension, fine or having the $102 million quarterback undergo counseling or rehabilitation.
He is expected to join his teammates Monday for offseason practice, the first time he has taken the field since the Steelers season-ending victory over Miami in January. The team’s veteran players have been involved in conditioning for several weeks, but Roethlisberger skipped those sessions to avoid being a distraction.
A leader on the field, the current situation has shown the six year two time Super Bowl champion has poor judgment off it. The situation has already cost the quarterback one of relatively few endorsement deals he has when PLB Sports, the company behind Doug Flutie’s “Flutie Flakes” cereal, announced he would no longer endorse its line of beef jerky.
