Mama Margie’s Major Meltdown: St. Louis Cardinals
Every Thursday Sports Grind Entertainment will present you with the Mama Margie’s Major Meltdown. The recipient of this honor goes to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals gave up nine runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night, losing 12-9.
Down 9-3, the Rockies came through with nine runs against just two Cardinals pitchers, Dennys Reyes and Ryan Franklin. The inning started off with a Miguel Olivo single but Seth Smith followed with a lineout. Another single and a walk followed, with Olivo scoring on a passed ball on the walk.
In came Cardinals closer Franklin who was sporting a 2.16 ERA and immediately gave up a three run home run to Chris Iannetta. With the score 9-7 and the bases empty Dexter Fowler doubled to start another rally. After a Brad Hawpe groundout, Carlos Gonzalez singled in Fowler from third. 9-8.
Then came an RBI single by Jason Giambi that scored Gonzalez all the way from first to put the score at 9-9. Olivo came up for the second time in the inning and delivered another single. This brought Smith up for a chance at redemption since he recorded the first out of the inning and he blasted a walkoff homer for a 12-9 Rockies victory with Peter Burns in attendance.
It was the largest ninth-inning comeback in Rockies history.
