WTF: San Antonio Express-News

I'm sorry how many major sport franchises do we have here?

First let me start off by saying once again that I love my city of San Antonio all that comes with it. I love the city so much that at times I act as if the negative doesn’t even exist but over the weekend I ran into a problem with the San Antonio Express-News.

On Saturday the San Antonio Spurs played the Los Angeles Clippers, understandably comes with a later start time here in San Antonio. However as I mentioned on today’s show, I left before the game had finished and just awaited to read about the finish through the Sunday paper which I’m a subscriber of everyday to. But to my surprise when I went outside and grabbed my paper in the morning there was no recap or any score just a post listing it as LATE.

Now this subject would have been dead to me after today’s show but it wasn’t with a few listeners, who called me after and couldn’t believe the Express-News would skip out on covering it’s only real major sports team in town. That’s where I had to dig up the paper, good thing I recycle and care about my planet, and relive this beef.

The callers where right we are talking about an organization that has brought four NBA championships to this city and helped put San Antonio on the map at least in the sports world. I know there’s other ways to achieve this information and I am an Internet rat but when you spend $237.60 yearly on what many call a dying business, you ask yourself is it necessary to continue to contribute to something that’s on life support?

This isn’t in anyway directed at Jeff McDonald but rather his employers. Those that make the decisions on how much coverage to give, when to holdup a deadline or whoever has the responsibility to run with the posting as LATE. I know what it feels like to work but not be there mentally and chalk it up as “just one of them days” but we are talking about the Spurs here not San Antonio Iguanas and when your asking $237.60 yearly from me, that’s unacceptable.

Kia Motors and the Spurs Foundation have teamed up to reward one special winner of the Bucks for Teachers Program with a visit from The Coyote and Spurs alum Johnny Moore, tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Boerne Middle School North.

In its first year, the Bucks for Teachers Program encouraged teachers from around the San Antonio area to submit essays explaining the challenges and needs they face in making improvements to their classroom. The program provides twenty winners with a grant to be used towards improvements to the classroom that will enhance the learning environment for the students.

This year’s winner, Ms. Mary Longoria, will utilize the funds to build a greenhouse with her seventh and eighth grade special education LIFE skills students. The Coyote and Moore will spend time with the students and help them pot plants to get their greenhouse started.

Phil Jackson Slaps The City Of San Antonio

"about to cause mass hysteria"

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson has been known to light some fires in the people of San Antonio with some of his comments, need I bring up the astrik talk?

Before the Lakers gotten skulled drugged by the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday 105-85, Jackson answered a rather innocuous question about the city of San Antonio before the game and in typical fashion he laced his response with Jackson sarcasm.

A reporter asked the coach whether he ran out of things to do during his latest trip to San Antonio. Jackson, who has previously made it well-known his distaste for the Alamo City, had this to say:

“I took a walk on the beautiful River Walk last night. There’s just some puddles here and there,” Jackson said. “This morning, the ducks were still out playing in the puddles, so it was kind of quaint. I understand they clean it up this time of the year, get in there and dredge it a little bit. There wasn’t much beauty in San Antonio this trip.”

Surprised anymore?

Alamo Bowl Sets ESPN Record With 8.9 Milli Viewers

8.9 Milli Viewers

The numbers are in for San Antonio’s 2010 Alamo Bowl from Saturday night and backed by the Mike Leach/Adam James controversy, the ratings and viewers soared to new heights. The Alamo Bowl had 8.9 million viewers, setting a record as the most-watched bowl game in ESPN history.

The 8.9 viewers that watched Texas Tech’s win over Michigan State drew a 5.2 overnight rating on ESPN, up 30% from a 4.0 for last year’s Missouri/Northwestern matchup.

Saturday night’s game drew a 12.5 rating in San Antonio and a 9.4 in Dallas, record highs in both markets for a bowl game on ESPN or ESPN2. The previous record was the Holiday Bowl between Washington/Texas (12/28/01) with a 9.4.

The game also drew a 10.6 in Detroit which was the third highest rated bowl game on ESPN/ESPN2 in that area. The highest rated game was the Outback Bowl between Florida/Michigan (1/1/03) with a 18.0 while the second-highest rated was the Alamo Bowl between Michigan/Nebraska (12/28/05) with a 16.4.

The Alamo Bowl also drew a rating of 8.1 in Houston which was the second-highest rated bowl game in Houston on ESPN/ESPN2 on record. The highest rated game was the Holiday Bowl, Texas/Oregon (12/29/00), with a 9.5.

The overall number put the Alamo just behind ESPN’s most-watched game ever the September’s showdown between USC and Ohio State, and helped the network blow away the competition for primetime viewing for the week.

The city of San Antonio and ESPN would like to send out a special thanks to Mike Leach, Adams James and father Craig James for your participation.

2010 Alamo Bowl: Texas Tech vs Michigan State

January 2nd 2010, 8 P.M.

January 2nd 2010, 8 P.M.

The January 2, 2010 Valero Alamo Bowl will see Texas Tech University (8-4 ,5-3) from the Big 12 come to San Antonio to take on Michigan State University (6-6, 4-4) from the Big Ten at the Alamodome. This will be the Red Raiders third appearance and the Spartans second in the 17 year history of the Alamo Bowl.

Both universitys are expected to travel well even in a down economy. The Red Raiders first played in San Antonio back in 1996 and lost in front of 55,552 fans to Iowa and again in 2001 but that time 65,232 fans showed up. The Spartans only appearance came back in 2003 when they lost to Nebraska in front 56,229 fans. One school will be leaving San Antonio will their first ever Alamo Bowl victory.

Mike Leach will be guiding Tech in their 16th straight bowl game but looking to redeem the Raiders performance in a bowl game after last years awful display on New Years Day to Ole Miss (47-34) in the Cotton Bowl.

Michigan State’s coach Mark Dantonio wishes it was a different story for him. Dantonio has yet to win a bowl game as the coach of the Spartans and hasn’t won since 2004 when he was the coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats.

But trying to win a bowl game for a Big Ten school isn’t his only problem hovering over the coach these days, as Dantonio recently kicked two players off the team and suspended another eight for their involvement in beating up fellow students in a scene right out of the movie Nerds. The campus police are still investigating the possible involvement of five more people but it’s unclear whether or not they are part of the football team.

That has raised the questions as to what kind of student athletes does Dantonio recruit and what kind of control does he have on his team. Students on campus have even given the team the moniker “jailbirds”. In a season that included a lose to Notre Dame and a negative spotlight cast upon the university because of its football team, if Dantonio fails to win in San Antonio could the leash be short in 2010?

This year’s game will be televised on ESPN at 8 p.m. CST.

Padres Promote Doug Dascenzo To San Antonio Missions Manager

San Antonio Baseball Est. 1888

San Antonio Baseball Est. 1888

I love my city and very proud of it, that’s why I continue to live here. I very much wish that there was a MLB franchise in San Antonio but there’s not. However I’m not denied the luxury of watching some of MLB future stars, as the San Antonio Missions are the Double A minor league affiliate to the San Diego Padres.

The Padres recently purchased by the Jeff Moorad and his ownership group that includes Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman have been in the last year doing transformation of their organization from top to bottom and that includes the San Antonio Missions. It was announced that Doug Dascenzo will be the new Manager for the 2010 season and joining on the field staff will be hitting coach Max Venable, pitching coach Glenn Abbott.

Dascenzo joins the Missions after three season as the manager of the Fort Wayne Tin Caps, the Single-A Affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Dacsenzo led the Tin Caps in 2009 to their first ever Midwest League Championship and Minor League best regular season record of 94-46. Dascenzo was honored as co-Manager of the year for the Midwest League in 2009. His overall record in his three seasons at Fort Wayne was 220-199 (.525).

Dascenzo played parts of seven seasons in the Majors with the Chicago Cubs 1988-1992, Texas Rangers 1993 and the San Diego Padres 1996.

Terry Kennedy, who has been promoted along with his entire staff of assistants to take over the Padres Triple-A club, the Portland, Oregon Beavers.

As always I will be in attendance when the Springfield Cardinals come through town, and that first stop looks to be in May.

ONE FINAL CHILI BOWL

chilibowl

Final Bragging Rights

It was announced yesterday and by now a majority of you have already heard that this years 67th annual Chili Bowl between Fox Tech High School and Lanier High School will be it’s last on Saturday night at Alamo Stadium.

Fox Tech High School will be transitioning itself into a “special purpose” magnet school because of declining numbers in attendance causing football to not be in the schools future plans. The school will offer programs for law and health careers.

Fox Tech has fielded a varsity football program since 1904 when it was called San Antonio High School. The two school have been facing each other since 1942, with a one year hiatus during World War II. Fox Tech leads the Chili Bowl all time series 41-20-5. The game has been a fixture at Alamo Stadium for many years and draws annually 10,000 fans.

If you didn’t attend either school, you probably work with or know someone who did because Fox Tech and Lanier roots run deep throughout this wonderful city.

Even for me, someone who didn’t attended either school, its still heartbreaking to hear of the news and see a strong San Antonio tradition come to an end, as I love my city and the things within it that make it unique.

This Saturday it will be sad to say goodbye.

The spot will air between the start of the second and end of the third innings and will be broadcast live on FOX as well as inside the stadium.  Near the conclusion of the 30-second spot – which celebrates the powerful emotions baseball creates – the action will turn live to the ballpark, where actors Terrence Howard and Minka Kelly will encourage the rest of the crowd and the viewing audience to “stand up” to cancer.

Stand Up 2 Cancer raises funds for innovative research conducted primarily by teams of scientists, aimed at accelerating the development of new cancer treatments in order to save lives now. MasterCard is also donating $1,000 for every home run hit throughout the entire 2009 Postseason. Through Game Two of the World Series, 50 home runs have been hit, resulting in a $50,000 donation thus far. Major League Baseball has given a $10 million donation to Stand Up To Cancer.

Right before God ’s fans the University of Incarnate Word Cardinals stretched their winning streak to four straight games in their inaugural year by beating Southwestern Assemblies of God 37-34.

Comalander Stadium was the site of history last night in Texas High School Football. That’s where James Madison High School head coach guided the Mavericks to a win over his former school the New Braunfels Unicorns. Streety collected his 300th win, becoming only the tenth head coach to ever accomplish such a feat in Texas High School Football. The 21-13 win was his 300th in coaching career that spans over 36-years, and started out in 1974 with the Unicorns.

A whole lot of Friday nights,” Streety said looking back on the 300 victories.

Highland Park’s Randy Allen, who has won 272 games, is now the active coach closest to the 300-win plateau.

Congratulations to you coach Streety and to every former player that had a helping hand in each of the victories.

Arkansas Tech University Wonder Boys opened the home portion of its 2009 schedule Saturday evening by posting a 40-10 victory over University of Incarnate Word Cardinals in front of 5,325 fans inside Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.

San Antonio Marathon Runner Gets 2-Year Doping Ban

Did I Do Bad?

Cheater

San Antonio based Olympic marathon runner Liza Hunter-Galvan accepts a two-year doping ban after admitting to using performance-enhancing drugs. The ban actually started on May 29, 2009 for the New Zealand native who said she had taken the banned substance three times earlier this year but claims to have been clean for her “entire career.”

This ends pretty much all possibility of Hunter-Galvan competing in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She has already competed for New Zealand in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics games, finishing 51st and 35th.Scott Newman, chief executive officer of Athletics New Zealand said

“It is abhorrent to think that a New Zealand athlete would choose this path.”

She also claimed she hadn’t known the substance she ingested contained EPO and she’d taken it only three times. That angered Jason Stewart, who ran the 800m for New Zealand at the 2004 Olympics and 2006 Commonwealth Games, saying:

“It’s the same excuse we always hear. It would just be refreshing if she came out and said . . . I cheated, I got caught, I rolled the dice and lost. I’m sick of hearing sh*t like this.”

Top marathoner Craig Kirkwood called her a dirty drug cheatand former elite 10,000m runner Robbie Johnston suggested she should never return to New Zealand. As a result of the ban Hunter-Galvan won’t be able to run this year or next in the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.
