Every Thursday Sports Grind Entertainment will present you with the Mama Margie’s Major Meltdown. The recipient of this honor goes to Canadian Broadcasting Corp. host Ron MacLean who attempted to compare the New York Rangers-Washington Capitals series to the first responders on Sept. 11. MacLean said the cities were linked in tragedy since both were targets of terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
MacLean said “it is crazy to compare what the emergency responders did during that time,” and then proceeded to do just that.
MacLean compared the players efforts in the games of the series to police officers and firefighters.
“The pain these men have faced, the price they keep on paying, the hearts they keep on lifting, it’s been through and through, five games in,” MacLean said.
MacLean finished the comparison by saying that “our worst day is their every day.”

The recipient of this honor goes to Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace formally known as Ron Artest for throwing an elbow that caught Oklahoma City Thunder’s James Harden in the head. The connecting elbow sent Harden to floor and had to leave the game on Sunday with a concussion. Peace was also ejected from the Lakers double overtime win and was later suspended by the league for seven games.

The recipient of this honor goes to Bobby Petrino who was fired from his job as head football coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks. Petrino was involved in a motorcycle early part of last week and by the end of the week it was uncovered he wasn’t the only passenger as previously reported. He was with former student and current aid Jessica Dorrell whom he paid some $20,000 dollars to and had over 4,000 phone calls to phone records showed.

The recipient of this honor goes to Houston Dynamo midfielder Colin Clark for being suspended three games by Major League Soccer for his use of a homophobic slur toward a ball ball on March 24. Clark was also fined him an undisclosed amount as microphones near the pitch caught him shouting the homophobic slur at the ball boy when he was slow to return the ball to Clark. In addition to his suspension and fine, MLS has also ordered Clark to attend diversity and sensitivity training.

The recipient of this honor goes to the Southern Mississippi band for chanting ‘Where’s your green card” to Kansas State guard Angel Rodriguez. Southern Mississippi has revoked the scholarships of five members of its pep band who took part in the heckling. The school announced that the five students also were removed from the band and will be required to complete a two-hour cultural sensitivity training course this week.

The recipient of this honor goes to the New Orleans Saints for the revelation that their players for three years had bounties on players and for slapping the franchise tag on Super Bowl winning quarterback Drew Brees.

The recipient of this honor goes to San Diego FOX sports anchor Ross Shimabuku for implying a sexist slur when talking about race car driver Danica Patrick. Fox 5 San Diego suspended Shimabuku without pay for a week for his comments about Patrick. The anchor stopped just short of calling Patrick a derogatory name on the air after the NASCAR driver complained the media always describe female athletes like her as “sexy.” When the broadcast returned to Shimabuku, he responded by saying: “Oh, I’ve got a few words starts with a B, and it’s not beautiful.” Shimabuku has since apologized.

The recipient of this honor goes to ESPN for sending out a racist headline over the weekend in describing Jeremy Lin committing nine turnovers during the New York Knicks loss to the New Orleans Hornets. ESPN promoted an article about the game on mobile platforms with a photo of Lin and the headline “Chink In The Armor.” Within hours of publishing the racially offensive headline, ESPN issued a formal apology and announced the firing of the editor responsible for the headline, Anthony Federico. ESPN later suspended the news anchor who said the headline on air for 30 days.

The recipient of this honor goes to Charlotte Bobcats for losing 16 games in a row to make their record to 3-26 on the season. This is the worst losing streak in Charlotte’s franchise history. The Bobcats haven’t won since Jan. 14 against Golden State Warriors.

The recipient of this honor goes to Tour de France champion Alberto Contador was stripped of his 2010 title when sports highest court rejected the Spanish cyclist’s story that contaminated meat caused him to fail a drug test. The 29-year-old Contador, who also won the Tour in 2007 and ’09, tested positive for clenbuterol during a Tour rest day in July 2010. Contador’s ban was backdated to Jan. 25, 2011 – making him eligible to return on Aug. 6.

The recipient of this honor goes to New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora for skipping a media session at the Super Bowl. Umenyiora missed a mandatory 45-minute interview session with the press for which he explained that he miss understood the schedule. He was fined $20,000 by the NFL two hours after missing the 45-minutes session.

The recipient of this honor goes to San Francisco 49ers return man Kyle Williams who fumbled twice in the NFC Championship game. Williams two turnovers lead to ten points for the New York Giants and the win. Williams two fumbles lead to him being the 49ers scapegoat and death threats he received on Twitter. The Giants are on their way to Super Bowl 46.

The recipient of this honor goes to Houston Texans return man Jacoby Jones whose inexcusable punt-return fumble helped put his team behind the eight ball against the Baltimore Ravens in Sunday’s AFC divisional playoff game. After letting a Sam Koch punt bounce on his own 20, Jones evidently thought it was a good idea to try and field the ball with a Ravens player in his face. Baltimore recovered the ball on Houston’s 2-yard line and scored a touchdown three plays later. That seven points would be the winning margin in the game.

The recipient of this honor goes to LSU quarterback Jordan jefferson for his performance in the BCS National Championship game. Jefferson engineered an offense that did not cross midfield until there were 8 minutes left in the game and finished with just 92 yards and only five first downs. He was sacked four times by the Alabama Crimson Tide defense and threw a mystifying interception when he attempted to flip away a desperation pass only to have it picked off because his intended receiver had already turned upfield looking to block.

The recipient of this honor goes to the University of Washington Huskies and Baylor University Bears defense in the Valero Alamo Bowl. The two teams gave up a total of 123 points in a four quarter game. Washington’s defense allowed Baylor to establish a bowl record for total offense in a game with 1,397 yards.

The recipient of this honor goes to Air Force in their unsuccessful attempt of a trick play at the Military Bowl. The game went back and forth with everything from a kickoff return for 87 yards. A pitch around the left end for 60, touchdown passes for 49 and 37 yards, multiple touchdowns scored on fourth downs and even a pair of botched onside kicks. Toledo and Air Force ran up the score early and often Wednesday at the Military Bowl and played to a wild finish, decided only when Air Force’s 2-point conversion attempt went awry with 52 seconds to play to give Toledo a 42-41 victory.
Air Force lined up to kick the extra point after Zach Kauth’s 33-yard touchdown catch on fourth-and-3 pulled the Falcons within a point. But holder David Baska ran the option instead and fumbled the ball toward kicker Parker Herrington, who chased it until it went out of bounds in the end zone.

The recipient of this honor goes to veteran sportswriter and columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News Bill Conlin who has been accused of molesting three girls and a boy in the 1970s, including his niece. Authorities said no criminal charges would be pursued against Conlin because the allegations of abuse happened too long ago.
Conlin, a Hall of Fame baseball writer and author, retired just ahead of the story’s publication online by The Philadelphia Inquirer. The newspaper reported that the four accusers claim Conlin groped and fondled them in the 1970s, when they were ages 7 to 12.
Conlin had worked at the newspaper for more than four decades, starting in 1965 and becoming the beat writer for the Philadelphia Phillies the next year. He held that job for 21 years and became a columnist in 1987. He also was a commentator on the ESPN program “The Sports Reporters” and wrote two baseball-related books, the “Rutledge Book of Baseball” and “Batting Cleanup, Bill Conlin.”
He received the 2011 J.G. Taylor Spink Award presented at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., and is honored in the hall’s “Scribes and Mikemen” exhibit. The Baseball Writers’ Association of America said the allegations would not affect his award.
Daily News editor Larry Platt said he didn’t know about the allegations until Tuesday when he accepted Conlins retirement papers. He described the emotions in the newsroom as “overwhelmingly a sense of shock, a sense of outrage, a sense of sadness.”
In one recent column titled “Tough Guys Are Talking About Sandusky,” Conlin questioned people who say they would have intervened had they witnessed child sex abuse.
“Everybody says he will do the right thing, get involved, put his own ass on the line before or after the fact. But the moment itself has a cruel way of suspending our fearless intentions,” he wrote.

The recipient of this honor goes to University of Tennessee football for losing to the Kentucky Wildcats snapping a 26 year winning streak against the school with a 10-7 victory that kept the Volunteers from reaching bowl eligibility. Kentucky had not won the game between the two schools since 1984 and it came with the help of senior wide receiver Matt Roark who filled in at quarterback with 124 yards on 24 carries. Roark filled in at quarterback because Maxwell Smith and Morgan Newton were injured. Roark finished 4 of 6 for 15 yards passing.
The Vols last lost on the road to Kentucky in 1981 and, coupled with their 6-7 finish last year, have ended seasons with consecutive losing records for the first time since 1910-11.

The recipient of this honor goes to the University of Alabama’s special teams, who played a major part in their lost to number one LSU 9-6. Alabama missed four field goals, including Cade Foster’s 52-yard attempt after the Tide got the ball first in the extra period. Foster missed two first-quarter field goals, and Jeremy Shelley had one blocked before Shelley finally made one from 34 yards.Foster made one from 46 yards after Jarrett Lee threw his second pick of the game. It however wasn’t just the kicking woes that helped doom the Crimosn tide as Marquis Maze wound up at the center of two key miscues in the fourth quarter. Maze was couldn’t catch the long line-drive punt. He turned away from it around his own 40 and the ball rolled all the way to the Alabama 19.

The recipient of this honor goes to the Texas Rangers bullpen, mainly Alexi Ogando, Neftali Feliz, Scott Feldman and Mark Lowe who were all credited with blown saves and a loss in Game 6 as the St. Louis Cardinals made five separate comebacks. It’s the first time in World Series history a team has had three blown saves in a single game. The Rangers had chances lots of chances to put Game 6 out of reach early or finish it late and couldn’t do it even twice within the last strike of being crowned World Series champions. This was just the third time that a team one out from elimination in the World Series came back to win the game. The New York Mets did it with Bill Buckner’s mistake and wound up winning the championship. In 1911, the New York Giants rallied past the Philadelphia A’s in Game 5, but lost the next game.

The recipient of this honor goes to Oakland Raiders quarterback Kyle Boller for being benched for Carson Palmer who had been on the couch till he was traded to the team in the middle of the week. Boller dropped back on Oakland’s first series and threw a pass to the left sideline that Kendrick Lewis intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Boller and Palmer each threw three interceptions and the Kansas City Chiefs took advantage of the rusty quarterback play to win their third straight game beating Oakland 28-0 Sunday in their most lopsided road win ever against the Raiders. Boller was 7 for 14 for 61 yards and became the first Raiders quarterback to throw three interceptions in the first half since Donald Hollas in 1998 against Miami Dolphins.

The recipient of this honor goes to Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman who threw four interceptions against the Philadelphia Eagles at home and was later benched for backup John Beck in the game. The Redskins ended up losing 20-13 to the Eagles and Grossman ended up losing his starting job to Beck, who was anointed as the new No. 1 by coach Mike Shanahan to start Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Beck will make his first NFL start since 2007, when he was a rookie for a Miami Dolphins team that went 1-15.
Grossman has 11 total turnovers including two fumbles through five games this season, and 18 in eight Redskins starts dating to last season. He has 46 touchdown passes and 49 interceptions in a career that reached its peak when he led Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl after the 2006 season. Grossman’s quarterback rating is 66.5, ranking 32nd of 33 quarterbacks in the league.

The recipient of this honor goes to the Philadelphia Phillies who were heavily favored to reach the World Series after winning a Major League Baseball best 102 games and having perhaps the best pitching staff in all of the bigs, which the St. Louis Cardinals beat three of them. The Cardinals needed a monumental collapse by Atlanta Braves in the final month and received major help from the 102-win Phillies to reach the playoffs when they defeated the Braves in a three game sweep in the final series of the season. The Phillies exit from the postseason meant that the two teams with the top two records and payrolls in the majors – were gone in the first round, even while holding home-field advantage.
